Herman-Norcross FFA advisor Tom Schoper is justifiably proud of his Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter.

“We are small, but mighty,” he said.

In  fact, the Herman-Norcross FFA chapter has only 19 members, three of whom are girls with a remarkable record of achievement.

Haley Volker, 10th grade, Addison Blume, 9th grade, and Chloe Winther, 7th grade, are Schoper’s “go-to” chapter members when it comes to contests and FFA competitions.

For years, Blume was the chapter’s leader in fruit sales. The chapter sells boxes of fruit as their main fund raiser for the year. This year, Blume sold $1,200 worth. That wasn’t enough to beat the 7th grader, Chloe Winther, who sold $40 more.

“I sold to people I know from church,” said Addison.

“I went door to door,” said Winther. “People want to support FFA, and apples are a good seller.”

But Blume won several other competitions, including the first annual tractor driving contest at the Grant County Fair, and the Region 3 horse judging contest this past fall. Rather remarkable considering Blume does not raise horses on her farm.

“We had an ag instructor a couple of years ago, who got me interested in horses,” she said.

“Haley is a fearless young lady,” said Schoper. “She walks into a contest and wins.”

All three young women come from agricultural backgrounds, have parents who are active farmers,  are involved in 4-H, and have family members with a long history of FFA involvement.

“I really like the competition and meeting kids,” said Volker.

The Herman-Norcross FFA chapter has competitions coming up in crop, poultry, small animal, and ag sales, as well as proficiency interviews, public speaking competitions, dairy cattle, ag mechanics, meats, and a talent contest coming up this winter and spring, culmanating at the State FFA Convention April 24-26. So the Herman-Norcross “small but mighty” FFA chapter will have plenty more chances to shine.
