In its first meeting of 2024, the Elbow Lake City Council announced a revision in electric rates and confirmed the slate of city officials for the year.

Residents served by Elbow Lake Municipal Power will experience a 4% increase in their electricity rates. This adjustment means an additional $6.00 for homes using 1000 kilowatt hours. The new rates will take effect in the billing cycle from January 15 to February 15, with the increased charges appearing on March statements.

In addition to the electric rate revision, the council addressed the challenges facing this winter’s ice rink preparations. Unusually dry and warm conditions have significantly hampered the setup of the large ice rink, with officials suggesting that the opportunity to establish a solid ice surface may have already passed. The prospects for the smaller rink remain uncertain, dependent on weather conditions in the coming weeks. However, the likelihood of successfully freezing the rink is diminishing. Current ground temperatures pose a risk of water absorption into the soil, potentially resulting in muddy conditions rather than the desired ice layer suitable for skating.
