Everyone knows Todd Kemper as “Whitey.” His father was known as “Big Whitey.” So when Kemper and  Kate Jirsa took over the lease of The Broken Paddle Bar and Grill in Herman, they  knew right off what to call the place: “Big Whitey’s Bar and Grill,” which opened in November and has been a welcome addition to Herman.

Jirsa, who has a background in Early Childhood Education and Healthcare, manages Big Whitey’s Bar and Grill, while Todd works full-time in Alexandria. Jirsa  is from the Twin Cities, and Kemper is from the Melrose area. The two have been living in Herman for the past eight years and, although they  were regulars at The Broken Paddle, they admit they had no experience running a bar and grill before they took over. However, they saw what people liked, and what they didn’t like and went from there.

“We plan to bring back some things such as the pool table and darts,” said Jirsa.

They had their first meat raffle this past Saturday night.

They will also have  Burger Night on Tuesdays, Wing Night on Wednesdays, and plan to add more specials over the next couple of months.  Friday or Saturday nights, Big Whitey’s offers steak specials.

Big Whitey’s Bar and Grill is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., with the kitchen opening at 5:00. Big Whitey’s is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. on Friday, and Saturday’s hours are from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m., with the kitchen opening at 11:00 a.m.

Big Whitey’s offers drinks and good food, as well as off-sale.
