Monday evening, WCA  recognized  West Central Area’s MSHSL Excel and Triple A Award winners.

The ExCEL Award (Excellence in Community, Education, and Leadership Award) is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who work voluntarily in their community.

WCA’s 2021-2022 ExCEL Awards winners are: Elizabeth Pollard and Isaac Kreft.

Elizabeth Pollard is the daughter of Sarah and Quentin Pollard.  She is active in tennis, musical, one act play, and softball. She is also a member of National Honor Society, Student Council Secretary, Knowledge Bowl, Concert Band, Mock Trial, and is on the Honor Roll.  Elizabeth has volunteered her time at the Elbow Lake Library, the local Blood Drives, WCA Changemaker Events, church events, the local Veterans Day program, and Feed my Starving Children.  Last year, Elizabeth was accepted into Harvard University Summer Pre-College program studying neuropsychology.

Isaac Kreft is the son of John and Kari Kreft.  He is active in football, basketball, speech, and baseball.  He is the Vice President of National Honor Society and Student Council, and is a member of Concert Band, Concert Choir, Knowledge Bowl, Boy Scouts, and is on the Honor Roll.  Isaac has volunteered his time helping with the various projects at the Elbow Lake library, reading at church, construction projects around the district, helping with the local Veterans Day service, and reffing and working at youth and football and basketball events.

The AAA Award (Academics, Athletics, and Arts)  is an award to recognize and honor high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the fine arts.  The ideal candidate has achieved academic excellence and, at the same time, put forth the time and effort to participate in a League-sponsored athletic program and a fine arts activity.

WCA’s 2021-2022 Triple A Award winners are: Tyler Biss and Kjersten Nibbe.

Tyler Biss is the son of Scott and Mareen Biss.  He is active in cross country (6 years), basketball (6 years and captain this year), golf (2 years), choir (6 years), and speech (6 years).  Tyler is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council President, FFA President, 4-H club and county President.  As Tyler stated in his essay, “Through my active involvement in arts, athletics, and academics, I have developed perseverance, time management, and leadership skills.  I have learned to lead when I’m one of the best and not the best in an activity.  I have also learned as long as I am giving 100 percent effort on an activity, project, or job, it doesn’t matter if I’m the best or not.”

Tyler is planning on attending North Dakota State University and majoring in Ag Education.

Kjersten Nibbe is the daughter of Marcy and Wade Nibbe.  KJ has taken College in the Schools classes and maintains a 3.9 GPA.  She is active in tennis (3 years), wrestling manager (6 years), choir (6 years), softball (6 years), trap shooting (6 years), 4-H, and National Honor Society.  As KJ stated in her essay, “I am thankful for everything that arts, athletics, and academics have taught me.  I have gained many other skills such as patience, how to be respectful, time management, social, and many more.  I practice these skills and they have helped me become a better student and person.  Without them, I would not be nearly as developed, successful, and well-rounded as a person.”

KJ plans on attending University of Mary College and is currently undecided on her major.
