Members of the Herman-Norcross Chapter of FCCLA attended the Minnesota Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (MN FCCLA) State Conference in downtown Minneapolis from April 7-9, 2024. This three-day leadership conference provided students with opportunities to compete in vocational skill competitions judged by industry experts, recognize their hard work, and experience personal and professional growth through workshops and speakers.

A total of 566 individuals from 43 schools across Minnesota attended the conference, with 559 participants competing in 45 Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Events. Herman-Norcross had twelve participants in these events, all earning gold medals and advancing to the National STAR Events in Seattle in July.

Herman-Norcross FCCLA members who participated in STAR Events included:

• Hayley Bertram and Josey Vipond in Nutrition and Wellness Level 1—gold medalists and national advancers.

• Carter Fickes and Jonathan Olson in Interior Design Level 2—gold medalists and national advancers.

• Kaden Lennes in Chapter Service Project Portfolio Level 2—gold medalist and national advancer.

• Makayla Bertram, Jennaya Pederson, and Madeline Corey in Chapter in Review Portfolio Level 2—gold medalists and national advancers.

• Addison Blume in Job Interview Level 3—gold medalist and national advancer.

• Emily Drewicke, Jordyn Perry, and Sadie Vipond in Interior Design Level 3—gold medalists and national advancers.

STAR Event participants from Herman-Norcross were awarded trophies for having five gold medalists from the Central West Area STAR Event Competition and three State STAR Events earning gold.

During the conference, Central West Area President Kaden Lennes fulfilled his term as Area President and was elected as the 2024-2025 Central West Area Vice President. Lennes also had the honor of presenting the United States Flag at the conference’s opening ceremony. Additionally, Josey Vipond showcased a poster highlighting the HNCS Chapter Service Project “Round Up Cancer” during the opening ceremony. Hayley Bertram received the New Member Award, and Jordyn Perry was awarded the Chapter Spark Award at the Academy Awards.

The conference featured speakers and workshops emphasizing overcoming adversity and promoting personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education. This aligns with FCCLA’s mission to help members develop skills for life, focusing on family roles, career preparation, and community leadership.
