The West Central Area/Ashby Homecoming Week is here!  Homecoming Friday is Oct. 7 in Barrett with a 6 p.m. kickoff.  The week’s events leading up to it are plentiful and sure to appeal to young and old alike.

The week commences as each school crowns its Royalty—Ashby’s on Sunday the 2nd and WCA’s on Monday the 3rd.

Volleyball takes center stage on Tuesday as WCA takes on Melrose and Ashby is at home versus Ortonville.  We do it all again on Thursday with WCA hosting Minnewaska and Ashby competing against Battle Lake. First serve both nights is at 7:30.

Wednesday night Junior and Senior girls vie for gridiron glory in the Powder Puff football game.  The Homecoming bonfire will burn after the game on the edge of the track.

On Friday morning, the WCA band and senior royalty visits the elementary schools to get them in the Homecoming spirit.  They return to Barrett to rally the Knights during the afternoon pep-fest.

Pregame activities sponsored by the WCA Education Foundation abound on Friday afternoon on the WCA grounds:

• Students preK-6 can partake in the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition. Starting at 4:00 p.m., all those who kick twice and throw once will receive a bag of popcorn, with the top throwers and kickers in each category earning t-shirts.

• Elementary Cross Country Fun Run – elementary students can try a little Cross Country action on the WCA track. Meet in front of the grandstand at 4:00 p.m.

• Everyone’s favorite tailgating party – The Taste of WCA/A, kicks off at 4:30 p.m.  Civic organizations will serve pre-game mainstays such as brats, taco-in-a-bag, cheese curds, and pork chops.  The Ashby Band will provide pep band tunes to chew by.

• To celebrate WCA’s 30th Homecoming, the original 1993 WCA teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, cooks, bus drivers, and administrators are gathering.  Honorary Homecoming Captains Roger Toso and Jerry Ness will represent the group and flip the coin prior to kickoff.

•Area veterans are invited to participate in the on-field presentation of the American Flag and our National Anthem. Vets can stay and enjoy the game free of charge in a reserved section of the grandstand.  A giant 30’ x 60’ version of Old Glory will be specially presented by the 1993 original staff and veterans.

•Take in the 20 yard long Homecoming logo painted on the field by drafting students.  Can you find the hidden year and anniversary?

•As kickoff gets closer, watch to the north as the Cross Country team runs the game ball onto the field.

•Halftime will feature the fan favorite WCA Marching Band Field Show and the introduction of the Homecoming Royalties.

Come to greet your former teachers.  Find your old classmates.  Rekindle high school memories and make some new ones.  Come home for Homecoming.

The Homecoming kickoff is early, at 6:00 p.m. versus Breckenridge. Come and make an afternoon of it. Find your old school colors, or wear the WCA/A Red, Black, & Silver to show your pride.
