Life on the Prairie

Ten girls from the Herman Girl Scout troop went on a field trip to DeSmet, SD to experience what Laura Ingall’s life was like over a hundred years ago. The Ingalls’ Homestead/Laura’s Living Prairie offers many 1900-style hands-on activities.  The scouts got to experience a dugout with a dirt floor and ceiling, use a washboard and ringer to do laundry, operate a pump organ and sewing machine.  They had the joy of driving a team of Percherons across the prairie to the schoolhouse where they were able to experience a 1900’s school lesson.  They also took a corn cob, shucked it, ground the kernels and used the cob to make a doll.  Submitted by Chrissy Oachs
