Steve Vrchota, executive director for Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management, spoke at last Friday’s open house at the new Metal Recovery Facility and Glacial Ridge Compost Facility, located on the Douglas/Grant County line, just east of Hoffman. The 80’ x 160’, $2.6 million facility recovers metal from the Pope/Douglas ash landfill located there, and brought from the Alexandria incinerator. It is expected to pay for itself in two to three years, with the valuable metals recovered and sold. Also located at the site is the Glacial Ridge Compost Facility, which composts recycled organics (food waste) from residents and commercial establishments from a six county area, including Grant County.
