The students at the Herman-Norcross school may be hoping for a snow day in December. That snow day will be forgiven after action taken by the school board at their meeting on Nov. 19. The action was to forgive any snow day needed in late November or December.

The reason for this was because of the scheduled make-up day for the snow day. In the school calendar, the make-up day for a snow day before the holidays would be on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026. This would be the Friday right after the holiday break.

The board members agreed that this would probably not be a good day to hold a school day as students may not be ready to get back into the swing of things. Starting the quarter again on Monday would be more productive.

This action was just a small part of the meeting with Superintendent Jessica Dietz also presenting several items for board approval.

One of these was the Comprehensive Achievement and Civic Readiness report, which was formerly called the World’s Best Workforce report.

In this report, Dietz pointed out that the mission, goals, strategies and vision are presented. The goals for the next school year will be four and last year there were five. One of those goals was not met, which was that all preschool students would be ready for kindergarten. Seven of the eight preschoolers were ready for kindergarten.

The former goals were that all preschool children will be ready for school, all racial and achievement gaps are closed, all students are ready for careers or college, all students are prepared to be lifelong learners and there will be a 100 percent graduation rate in 2026.

The board approved the report, which will now be available for the public to see by stopping at the school for a copy.

Dietz told the board members that the HVAC system is working, but there has been some noise from one of the rooftop units. Ellingsons has been out to look at it and recommended that it be replaced or rebuilt this spring if the noise can be tolerated. It is no longer under warranty.
