
Joe Montonye, 68, of Barrett, died Thursday, February 23, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family.
A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at United Lutheran Church, Elbow Lake. Visitation was Monday, February 27, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at United Lutheran Church and resumed one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
Joseph Peter Montonye was born November 22, 1954, in Morris, MN, to Paul and Mary Ellen (Murphy) Montonye. He grew up on a small farm in southern Stevens County and attended Morris Public School where he was active in 4-H, wrestling, and was a member of the Student Council. He graduated with the class of 1972. Joe furthered his education at the University of Minnesota, Crookston with a degree in Soil and Water Management and Civil Engineering Technology.
In 1974, he started working full time for the Grant Soil and Water Conservation District, first as a technician, and later as manager. Joe retired in 2020. He served on the Barrett volunteer Fire Department for twenty years; was active in Grant County Ducks Unlimited, and the Pioneer Heritage Conservation Trust Board. He had a passion for anything outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, and gardening. When he wasn’t able to be outside, he enjoyed wood carving.
Joe is survived by his wife, Vickie; son, Kenneth (Kayla) Montonye, daughter, Jennifer Montonye; grandchildren, Daxon, Ava & Eli; sisters, Paulette (Jere) Solvie, Margaret (Bob) Fuchs; sisters-in-law, Roxanne Lokkesmoe and Gay Montonye; his retriever, Nellie; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary Ellen Montonye; brother, William Montonye, father and mother-in-law, John and Clara Honzo; and brother-in-law, John Honzo.
