It seems like this fall sports season was a blink, starting with very little notice and ending very abruptly. WCA Volleyball was fortunate to have played thirteen out of the fourteen allowed games for the regular season. Winning games against Ashby, Parkers Prairie, Ortonville, Hillcrest, and Rothsay. Losses were to Battle Lake, Wheaton, Underwood, Minnewaska, Brandon Evansville, Hancock and Benson. Our last game of the season was November 23, and the team had decided that they wanted to have the awards ceremony in person if possible, but unfortunately we could not, so all teams met virtually on December 21 to receive their honors and awards.
The Knights volleyball team consisted of only two seniors this year, Morgan Stark and Brooke Anderson. They were remarkable volleyball players and even better humans! They will be greatly missed out on the court next season. Juniors on the team were Kennedy Ulrich, Maddie Nadgwick, Halle Foslien, Kaitlyn Hansen, Elizabeth Rustan and manager Halle Grosz. Eighth graders Mya Fosien, Macy Grosz, Sophie Sanstead, and Addison Staples contributed impressively this season too.
The 2020 steady server award went to Brooke Anderson, who served 98% on the season with 18 aces. The serving ace award went to Mya Foslien with 97% serving and 19 aces. Macy Grosz was the Knights assist leader with 203 set assists on the season. The blocking queen with 18 ace blocks was Elizabeth Rustan. Kill leaders for this season were Morgan Stark with 94 and Elizabeth Rustan with 93. Kaitlyn Hansen walked away as the digging queen with 222 digs on the season.
Team awards that were voted on by players and coaches were: most improved, Halle Foslien; Miss Hustle, Kaitlyn Hansen; most valuable offensive player, Elizabeth Rustan; most valuable defensive player, Kaitlyn Hansen; and the Knight Award/most valuable teammate went to Brooke Anderson.
Team Captains for the 2020 season were Morgan Stark, Brooke Anderson, and Elizabeth Rustan. Team captains for the 2021 season will be returning captain, Elizabeth Rustan and Halle Foslien.
Pheasant Conference honors went to Morgan Stark and Elizabeth Rustan, and honorable mentions went to Halle Foslien and Kaitlyn Hansen. KMRS/KKOK selected all section players for the first time and the Knights had Morgan Stark receiving honors and honorable mention went to Elizabeth Rustan and Brooke Anderson.
Thank you to those who were able to support us at our games and to those watching online. We appreciated the fan support! Thank you to the coaching staff, Kendra Stark for covering our games with photographs, Haley Grosz for an end of season slideshow, and to our Athletic Director Jake Foslien for helping us navigate through this unforgettable season.
A season is a season. We did what we could, we were happy to have played, and we walked away learning a lot about each other and hopeful for the future of WCA Volleyball.
