
Paige Beyer, a ninth-grader with the Border West girls golf team, golfed at the Minnesota State Class A Girls Golf Tournament last Tuesday and Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.
Beyer had a 99 the first 18 holes last Tuesday and came back with a 98 the second day for a 197 total, which earned her 32nd place out of 85 Class A golfers.
Beyer placed eighth at the Section 6A Girls Golf Meet to earn a state berth with a 36-hole total of 200. Park Christian won the Section 6A team title with Ottertail Central finishing as runners-up.
“Paige had a great season and it was a great experience for her at state,” said coach Corey Spilde. “We have a lot of good young golfers coming up so we’re excited about the future of Border West golf.”
At the state Class A Tourney, Legacy Christian won the 8-team title with a total of 716, followed by Lac qui Parle (723), Park Christian (741), and Fillmore Central (778).
Legacy Christian and Lac qui Parle were tied with 354 totals after the first day before Legacy beat the Eagles by seven strokes the second day to earn the championship trophy.
Emily Brandt, of Legacy Christian Academy, won the Class A girls title with a 165 total on rounds of 81 and 84, while Kianna Johnson, of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, was second with a 166 score (85-81), and Fillmore Central’s Courtney Hershberger was third with a 173 total, which included a 91 on the first day and an 82 the second, which was the second-best score of the second day.
Just missing out on a state berth for the Border West boys golf team this spring were Nolan Wilson, who missed out on state by one stroke, and Cole Gilsdorf, who missed a state berth by three strokes.
In the Class AA girls team competition, Lake City won the title with a 491 total on rounds of 330 and 161, while Fergus Falls was second (357-173–530), and Minnewaska Area was fourth (366-173–539).
Perham’s Mallory Belka won the Class AA individual girls title with a 114 on rounds of 76 and 38, while Lake City’s Ella Matzke was second (79-38–117), Minnewaska’s Berkley Steffen was 21st (86-44–130), and Minnewaska’s Alissa Thorfinnson was 25th (92-40–132).
Members of this year’s 36-member boys and girls golf teams at Border West are seniors Amber Findlay, Shane Tolifson, Nolan Frisch, Benji Hormann, Maysen Kleinschmidt, and Isaac Haanen; juniors Cole Gilsdorf, Caden Spilde, Logan Smith, Parker Tritz, Brayden Hormann, Dylan Bainbridge, Clint Determan, Nathan Johnson, and Anna Murphy; sophomores Bria Lundquist, Cammi Krump, Jack Siegel, Hudson Foss, Nolan Wilson, and Aspen Beyer; ninth-graders Paige Beyer, Peyton Forcier, Dylan Przymus, Jude Olson, Zach Hansen, Benny Peterson, and Julia Schmidt; eighth-graders Brock Vipond and Logan Wulff; and seventh-graders Adam Smith, Will Arens, Brayden McLain, Brynn Vangsness, and Kaden Lennes.
