Sophie Sanstead crosses the plate in the early innings of WCA’s first game vs. Ortonville last Thursday at home.
WCA defeated Ortonville 14-0 on Thursday, April 15, with big bats and two pitchers combining to throw a shutout.
West Central Area Knights varsity softball got things moving in the first inning scoring seven runs started by a big double from Halle Foslien that scored three runs. The Knights’ defense was also tough, allowing no errors in the field.
Pitching was on point with Emma Swenson starting the game and lasting three innings allowing one hit, zero runs, six strike outs and one walk. KJ Nibbe pitched the last two innings surrendering zero runs and striking out one.
WCA saw the ball well today, racking up nine hits in the game. Halle Foslien, Claire Stark, and Alaina Sykora each had multiple hits for the Knights. They not only hit well, they also tore up the base paths, as five players stole at least two bases. Sykora led the way with four.
Overall, this 14-0 win was a great first game for this young team.
GAME TWO:
Claire Stark and Emma Swenson pitched the second game against Ortonville. Swenson allowed zero hits while striking out six. Stark allowed two runs and struck out two. These two pitchers didn’t allow a single hit, as WCA defeated Ortonville 16-2.
Again, the bats were hot. WCA racked up 22 hits in game two. You could tell the girls got comfortable behind the plate. After spending so much time indoors to see a live pitch was new for both teams. Our team adjusted to the different speeds of the pitches and let the ball sail.
Claire Stark collected four hits in four at bats to help lead West Central Area Knights varsity to victory. Stark singled in the first, tripled in the third, singled in the fourth, and singled in the fifth.
Addison Staples, Sydney Ulrich, Madi Hansen, Emma Swenson, Mya Foslien and Halle Foslien each had big hits behind the plate. Multiple doubles and triples set us ahead earning seven runs in the fifth inning.
WCA totaled 22 hits. Swenson, Stark, Staples, Kennedy Porter, H Foslien, M Foslien, and Sydney Ulrich all managed multiple hits. Stark and Swenson all had four hits to lead this young team. West Central Area Knights varsity didn’t commit a single error in the field.
Overall a great first night. We look forward to seeing Broweville tomorrow evening. It will be a tough game and we look forward to see how we match up.
