The West Central Area boys cross country team finished second at the Section 6A meet Friday, Oct. 29, at Minnewaska Golf Club in Glenwood, to advance as a team to the Class A State Cross Country meet Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Lexi Bright and Terina Blascyk qualified for state for the WCA girls team, which finished fourth overall in Section 6A.

“I am so proud of them. They have worked so hard all season to achieve this goal. A lot of people don’t understand how difficult this is, to make it to state multiple years in a row,” Hanson said.

For Bright, this will be her sixth straight appearance.

“She makes it look easy,” Hanson said. “The rest of the seniors (Alex Salwasser, Kade Runge and Shad Swanson) have had five appearances, so this group is highly experienced and awarded.”

For sophomore Blascyk, it’s her second appearance and first time being back at state since seventh grade.

Kade Runge and Alex Salwasser finished second and third overall in the Section 6A boys 5K race. Shad Swanson finished in 11th overall in 17:37.26, and eighth-grader Aaron Biss debuted on varsity and finished in 21:06.16.

“We can’t take this for granted. We need to stay focused and redial our efforts this week,” Hanson added. “Some of our legs were tired and sore. I know that we can run better than we did on Friday. Everyone needs to stay humble and our leaders need to stay ready. Really excited for Saturday!”
