The West Central Area Knights traveled to Moorhead High School Saturday for a “home” game vs the Breckenridge Cowboys Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys proved to be little too much for the Knights to handle on this particular afternoon, giving WCA/A their first loss of the season by means of a 40-8 score.
Breckenridge scored a touchdown early in the first quarter to take the 7-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter Breckenridge QB found an open receiver while being pulled down by his jersey to score a 4th down 4-yard TD. The Knights next drive stalled after picking up several first downs when the Cowboys picked off a pass at the 2-yard line. On the next play the Knights defense swarmed the Cowboy runner in the end zone and getting the safety. Another promising drive stalled out with a failed 4th down conversion. An inadvertent whistle took back what appeared to be a Knight’s first down and gave them a do-over of 4th and 1 from the Cowboy 30-yard line. Anthony Sykora appeared to have picked up the first down but the spot measure it about 3 inches short. This moment proved to be the tipping point as the Cowboys launched a 67 yard TD pass on the 2nd play after this failed conversion and Breckenridge never looked back after this point.
The Knights put a touchdown on the board in the fourth quarter when Jaden Norby carried the ball into the end zone from 11 yards out.
Anthony Sykora (15 carries, 70 yards) and Jaden Norby (10 carries, 48 yards) led the rushing attack for the Knights who finished with 129 rushing yards and 131 total yards.
Breckenridge (3-0) will host Hawley (2-1) on Friday night. The 3-1 Knights will be home to unbeaten Barnesville (3-0).
