The West Central Area football team was on the road Sept. 27 in Atwater to battle the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons. The Knights dominated from the opening kick and ran away with the game to secure a 36-8 victory, which improves WCA to 4-1 on the season.
The first quarter was a little slow, but WCA was able to take a 6-0 lead when Owen Gruchow punched in a one-yard touchdown run.
The Knights added to their lead in the second quarter. Hunter Gruchow scored on a five-yard run and after a successful two-point conversion, WCA led 14-0. Later in the second, Ben Bye caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Sam Hanson to make it 22-0 at the halftime break.
Any hopes of a ACGC comeback were dashed quickly by the Knights in the third quarter. The score ballooned to 30-0 when Owen Gruchow ran one in from two yards out for his second score of the game. Later in the third, Austin Bennett caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Owen Gruchow to make it 36-0.
The Knights took their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter. The Falcons did spoil the WCA shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown, but the Knights happily took the 36-8 win.
WCA finished the game with 150 rushing yards and 98 passing yards for 248 yards of total offense. The Knights defense played well, only allowing 120 yards of total offense to the Falcons.
