The WCA boys basketball schedule did them no favors this past week as they played two road games against two tough opponents. First, they narrowly pulled off a 68-59 win over the Melrose Dutchmen in Melrose Jan. 23. Next, the Knights pulled off a 60-46 win over the Montevideo Thunderhawks in Montevideo Jan. 26.
The WCA Knights pulled out a win in another tough conference battle with the Melrose Dutchmen at Melrose 68-59.
The Knights led 33-15 at one point in the first half. Melrose made a run to cut the lead to 38-23 and then hit a 30 foot buzzer beater to end the half to pull within 38-26.
Melrose started the second half on a 21-6 run to lead 47-44, but the Knights out executed them down the stretch ending the game on a 24-15 run to win it.
“Every game in our conference is so tough. At one point five of the eight teams were all ranked in the state Top 20 in either Class A or Class AA. There are no easy games. Melrose beat us on a last second shot in December and we didn’t feel we played very well. In the first half tonight we played very solid on both ends, but they are a good team and so well coached, we knew they’d make a run. We had a composure time out with 8 or 9 minutes left and we were really proud how we ended the game after that. Great execution on defense getting stops and key rebounds and also good under control offense and getting buckets and free throws down the stretch,” head coach Kraig Hunter said.
