Knights take third in Class A at State

After three duals that all came down to the final weights, the West Central Area / Ashby / Brandon-Evansville wrestling team came home from the Class A State Team Tournament with hardware. The Knights upset No. 4 Kimball, lost to No. 1 Jackson County Central and beat No. 6 Dover-Eyota for third place at the team tournament Thursday, March 3, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

“I am very pleased with the way our young men brought the fight!  They gave it their all and put together a great tournament,” Knight coach Brandon Gruchow said.

The Knights finished the year, as a team, with a dual record of 25-5. They graduate three seniors off the team with the Class of 2022, including Reubens Swanson, Ashton Danner and Colton Lindquist.

WCA/A/B-E – 34

      Kimball – 33

Colton Lindquist secured a takedown 48 seconds into overtime to give the Knights a come-from-behind victory over No. 4 Kimball in the Class A Team quarterfinal dual Thursday afternoon, in St. Paul.

“We knew it was most likely going to come down to heavyweight. Colton was ready and got it done,” Gruchow said.

Lindquist, normally a 220-pounder for the Knights, got bumped up to heavyweight to avoid Kimball’s former top-ranked wrestler Carter Holtz and give the Knights a chance to win the dual with a win at heavyweight.

Lindquist earned a last second escape in the second period to go up 1-0 in the match. He attempted to ride out a 1-0 victory, but former top 10 wrestler, Ace Meyer, didn’t give up easily. Meyer got an escape with 25 seconds left in the third period to force an overtime.

Lindquist’s takedown gave him a 3-1 sudden victory and gave the Knights a 34-33 win over Kimball.

“I knew he could do it and so did he. He proved to everyone that he wanted himself and the rest of the team to move into the next round,“ Gruchow said of Lindquist’s heavyweight win.

Owen Gruchow at 106, Adam Lohse at 120, Hunter Gruchow at 132, and Anthony Sykora at 170 all took pinfall wins in the dual. Reubens Swanson took a major decision at 152.

Jackson County

Central – 41

WCA/A/B-E – 27

The 41-27 score did not reflect how close the WCA/A/B-E dual against top-seeded Jackson County Central was.

The light weights set the stage with Isaac Rodriguez of JCC pinning himself at 106, giving Owen Gruchow a 45-second pinfall victory.

“Owen recognized the situation he was in, and by making an adjustment he was able to secure a fall,” Gruchow said.

After back-to-back pins by JCC, Mason Richter tied the dual at 12-12 with a 1:45 pinfall at 126 pounds.

Jackson County Central and WCA/A/B-E traded decisions over the next four weights to stay locked at 18-18.

Jeremy Blascyk took the top-ranked wrestler in the state, 160-pounder Payton Handevidt, almost the full six minutes as Handevidt took a tech fall with 21 seconds left in the third period. That win gave JCC a 23-18 lead.

“We shifted, hoping for the pin at 195, and we also did it to avoid their stud at 182,” Gruchow said of JCC’s 182-pounder Caleb Vancura. “We were going to continue to push up, move Will to 220 and Colton to heavyweight until we lost at 195 and the dual was out of reach.”

Anthony Sykora took a 6-1 decision at 170 pounds to trim the deficit to 23-21. That’s as close as the Knights would get.

After a Vancura pin at 182, JCC led 29-21 with three matches to go.

Leading 5-4 at the start of the third period, a mid-period takedown gave JCC’s William Freking a 6-5 lead at 195. Beau Robinson was 13 seconds away from giving up a decision, but a pin by Freking put the dual out of reach for the Knights at 35-21 with just two matches to go.

Colton Lindquist took a pinfall win at 220 pounds in 3:28.

Dover-Eyota – 31

Win – That is all heavyweight Justin Blascyk had to do to give the Knights third place at the state tournament. He didn’t seem fazed by the pressure as he came out with a 5-2 decision over Addison Honsey of Dover-Eyota to give WCA/A/B-E a 35-31 win in the third-place match of the Class A State Team Tournament Thursday, March 3, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
