The MACA/WCA girls tennis team has just started practice Aug. 14, but their first match is coming fast Aug. 19. It will be a quick start to get ready in time, but with seven of the 10 players from the section team last season returning, MACA/WCA has the leadership and experience to get up to speed quickly.
The team is coming off a 2022 season where they finished 10-10 as a team and lost to Pipestone in the second round of the team section tournament.
Three of the players on that team have since graduated; Claire Stark, Elizabeth Pollard and Lydia Fynboh. Stark was the No. 1 singles player, Pollard spent most of her time at No. 3 singles and Fynboh played doubles in 2022.
The seven girls returning to the team this year are seniors Karlie Bruns, Ashley Koehl, Chloe Zimmel and Kristen Muller; juniors Gracie Hauglie and Nora Meek; and sophomore Izabell Hoffman.
Koehl and Bruns were doubles partners last year and had the best 2022 record of the returning players at 15-8. Two other returners had winning records. Meek finished 13-6 in doubles play and Hoffman was 11-9 overall.
The first action on the schedule for MACA/WCA is Saturday, Aug. 19 when they will host Luverne and Pipestone Area in Morris. They have a quick turnaround and two days later will travel to Osakis for a quadrangular Aug. 21.
