Senior Roman Mihailovschi and junior Benjamin Nyreen will represent West Central Area boys track and field at the Class A State Track and Field meet June 8-10, at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

Mihailovschi earned his first-ever state bid by clearing the state standard 6-02 in the high jump while Nyreen was runner-up in the discus event to earn his first state trip.

“The competition is great, 6A is a really competitive and deep section, so you really gotta show up or show out,” said Mihailovschi, who took fourth overall at the Section 6A meet Thursday, June 1, in Pelican Rapids.

“The other jumpers were really talented, so it’s nice to elevate yourself to that level and see how you stack up against the best of the best,” Mihailovschi added.

Nyreen was ranked second in the discus event, just six inches in front of Ross Kortenbush of Parkers Prairie. He knew he needed a good throw to qualify for state out of a competitive section.

“I knew I had to throw well to have a chance,” Nyreen said. “I didn’t end up throwing my best, but I did make it.”

Third-place finisher Kortenbush of Parkers Prairie was just 2.5 inches behind Nyreen, who had a best throw of 124-7. His season best is 132-07.

“Last year at sections, I threw a 109 and knew that this year I had a chance if I kept on improving. (State) was definitely a goal of mine,” Nyreen concluded.
