Rustan finishes as Class A heavyweight runner up

Will Rustan gets his hand raised on his way to the heavyweight finals during the Class A individual state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

There were five total individual wrestlers representing the West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville at the Minnesota Class A individual wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul March 1-2. The four boys included Owen Gruchow, Adam Lohse, Jeremy Blascyk and Will Rustan and Lucea Wales was the first girl in program history to qualify for state. The Knights finished with three wrestlers placing, led by Rustan with a second place finish at heavyweight, Gruchow came in sixth at 127 pounds and Wales was sixth at 124 pounds. 

At heavyweight, Rustan won his first three matches. First, he took down Quad County’s Jasen Jansen (38-12) with a 3-1 sudden victory. In the second match, Rustan earned an 11-6 decision win over Jaren Winselman (42-4) from Adrian Area. In the semifinals, Rustan had a 3-1 decision win over Badger/GB/MR’s Treston Nichols (39-7). Rustan went the distance in the finals, but lost by decision 7-2 to Keegan Kuball (42-4) from WEM-JWP to finish second.
