West Central Area graduates Marshall and Mitchell Dewey and current Ashby-Brandon-Evansville golfer Traeton Nelson were three of more than 500 golfers competing in the Resorters, advancing all the way to the final day. The Resorters is an annual tradition at Alexandria Golf Course and took place Aug. 2-9, featuring some of the top golfers of all ages from all over the area and country.

Both Deweys played in the Men’s Championship, which featured two days of qualifying with the top 32 making the Championship Flight and the next 16 making the First Flight. The two started Aug. 2 with the first day of qualifying at Geneva Golf Course, playing the Island and Marsh nines. Mitchell carded a 76 to put him in a tie for 22nd and Marshall shot 79 on the first day to sit in a tie for 46th.

The next day, the men’s championship was at Alexandria Golf Club and both Deweys played better and worked their way up the leaderboard on the final day of qualifying.

Mitchell played very well, finishing in red numbers with a three-under round of 68. Mitchell’s two-round total of even-par 144 made the Championship Flight cut and earned him the seventh seed.

Marshall shot a five-over 76 at AGC to finish with a 155 total to make it in the First Flight on the cutline and earn the 13th seed.

On Wednesday, Mitchell took on the 26th seed Gabe Weller, who shot 75-76-151 in qualifying. Mitchell played all 18 holes against Weller and finished with a two up victory to advance to the final 16 players. Thursday, Mitchell took on the 10th seed Parker Etzel, who shot 71-73-144 in qualifying. Mitchell once again played all 18 holes, but lost to Etzel one down on the final hole to end his week.

In the first flight on Wednesday, Marshall played the fourth seed Joe Bigger in the first round, who shot 81-73-155 in qualifying and lost on the 16th hole three and two. In the First Flight Consolation on Thursday, Marshall played the 12th seed Tyson Eckhoff, who shot 81-74 in qualifying for the same two day score as Marshall, 155. Marshall made it to the 17th hole, before losing two and one to Eckhoff to end his week.

Nelson competed in the junior 13-15 division and played an 18-hole qualifying on Sunday, where he shot 76 to tie for fourth, two shots off the medalist score.

He earned the fifth seed in the championship flight and beat the 12th seed Soren Kompelien in the first round with an easy six and four win. After a day off, Nelson was back in action on Wednesday when he beat four seed Luke Langley four and three to advance to the semifinals. On Friday, Nelson kept his roll going, taking down eighth seed Josh Bell six and five to make it to championship Saturday.

In his only close match of the week, Nelson took on the second seed Henry Buttweiler in the finals. The two battled through 18 holes, but were still tied, until Nelson won the 19th hole to take home the 13-15 junior title.
