Wheaton / Herman-Norcross was shutout in the second half and suffered its first loss of the season in a 36-15 Class Nine-Man semifinal loss at the hands of Mountain Iron-Buhl Thursday, Nov. 17, at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

After both teams punted on its first possession, the two offenses started finding their groove, trading blows early. Marshall Tolifson connected on a 55-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Walker-Hannemann to cap off a nine-play 80-yard drive to score first in the game.

MIB responded with a seven-play, 80-yard drive of its own to go up 8-6. Asher Zubich connected on a 47-yard pass to Brayden Keith then Zubich added a two-point conversion with his legs to give the Rangers the lead.

The Warriors couldn’t convert at the MIB nine-yard-line, turning the ball over on downs late in the first quarter. MIB grinded out 91 yards in over six minutes to go up 14-6 when Zubich scored from one-yard out.

It was W/H-N’s turn to respond and the Warriors did on the next possession, driving 64 yards on just three plays to trim the deficit to 14-12 with three minutes left in the half. Tolifson and Walker-Hannemann connected for the second time on the day for a 31-yard touchdown.

MIB had to punt after just six plays and 15 yards to give W/H-N the ball back at its own 34-yard-line with 1:27 left in the half.

Just like the Warriors have all season, they moved the ball quickly and efficiently in the two-minute drill, going 49-yards in eight plays. However, on the second play of the drive, Marshall Tolifson was knocked out of the game as he was hit out-of-bounds by L Kniefel. The Warriors were awarded 15 yards on the personal foul penalty, but Tolifson did not return for the remainder of the game.

Holden Rinke came in to replace him under center. In his first play, Rinke connected with Brayden Hofer for a 16-yard completion down to the MIB 29-yard-line. Rinke followed up the completion with four straight runs for 12 yards to get the Warriors into field goal territory. Clint Determan connected on a 34-yard field goal to give the Warriors a 15-14 lead at halftime.

Without Tolifson at the helm, the Rangers took advantage and kept the Warriors off the board in the second half while putting up 22 unanswered points for the win to advance to the Class Nine-Man Prep Bowl against Spring Grove Dec. 3.

Tolifson was 7-for-9 for 151 yards and two touchdowns before exiting with the injury. Rinke went 11-for-14 for 68 yards with an interception in the red zone. Brayden Hofer ran 15 times for 35 yards. Walker-Hannemann had six catches for 123 yards.

Defensively, Grant Dawson had 13 tackles to lead the Warriors. Kevin Casper added 12 for the Warriors, who ended the year 12-1.

The Warriors graduate 11 seniors off their roster this coming spring, including Andrew Walker-Hannemann, Bryant Callenius, Dylan Bainbridge, Patrick Forcier, Grant Dawson, Brayden Hofer, Clint Determan, Logan Smith, Nathan Johnson and Caden Spilde.

“The end of the season is always hard and some years hit differently than other years. This year seems to be one of those years,” Warrior coach James Paul posted publicly on Facebook. “Although team goals were met and we had great success, it’s hard to not think about what is lost. Four captains and many more that could have been, 11 seniors, a ton of athleticism, but most importantly a whole bunch of amazing people! As a coach, sometimes it’s difficult to put into words the appreciation and love that grows while aging along with their players. Somehow they become a part of you and when they’re done part of you breaks. Love you fellas! You are individuals that all can look up to and you ended THE WARRIOR WAY, THE END OF AN ERA, and you truly resemble what the LAST WARRIOR STANDING should embody!”
