After shaking the rust off in practice, the Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Warrior softball team was officially able to kick off their season April 4. The Warriors were at home in Wheaton to start the season when Hankinson came to town. Thanks to a strong performance from Jadyn Kellen in the pitching circle, the Warriors started the season with a 5-1 win.

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross was the first team to the scoreboard. After a scoreless first, the Warriors broke the ice with a run in the bottom of the second. Thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Grace Dawson, Sadie Vipond was able to score from third to give W/H-N a 1-0 advantage.

Hankinson got their first hit and first run in the top of the third. The Warriors were blanked in the bottom of the third and the score was tied at 1-1 after three.

After four scoreless half-innings, the Warriors broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth. A double from Blume and a walk from Jordyn Perry put runners at first and third with one out. Emily Drewicke hit a single to score Blume. In the next at bat, Hadley Berger cleared the bases with a triple to give the Warriors 4-1 with two innings to play.

The three-run lead was not enough for the Warriors. In the bottom of the sixth, Dawson tripled to center and Maddie Corey got a pinch-hit single to put runners at the corners with one out. Blume came up and drove in Dawson with a single to make it 5-1.

Hankinson needed four runs in the top of the seventh to stay alive. They were able to draw two walks in the inning, but the Warriors left them stranded when Perry caught a pop up at shortstop to seal the W/H-N win.

The Warriors finished the game with nine hits and held Hankinson/Tri-State to just four hits in seven innings.

Blume led the team on offense, finishing 3 for 4 with a double, a run, an RBI and a steal. Dawson went 1 for 3 with a triple, a run, an RBI and a steal. Berger finished 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBI. Drewicke was 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Jordyn Perry finished 1 for 3 with a run. Makayla Bertram was 1 for 3 and Corey went 1 for 1.

In the pitching circle, Kellen pitched all seven innings and allowed one earned run off four hits and struck out eight for the Warriors.

The next action for the Warriors will be a road contest against the Ortonville Trojans on Thursday, April 11. W/H-N will be back at home in Wheaton on Monday, April 15 for a doubleheader with Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.
