After a couple weeks of practice and a scrimmage, the West Central Area volleyball team was able to kick off their regular season on their home floor in Barrett in a West Central Conference matchup against Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Sept. 1. The Knights only needed four sets to come away with the 3-1 win to start off the season 1-0.
WCA came out ready to play in the first set of the season and quickly jumped out to an 18-10 advantage over the Tigers. The Knights clung onto the lead, despite a furious MACA comeback and won the first set 25-23.
It was a sloppy start for both teams in the second set with multiple service errors, but thanks to a service run from Ashlyn Lohse, the Knights grabbed a 17-11 advantage. Once again, MACA fought their way back into the set, but WCA hung on for a 25-22 win to go up 2-0.
With their backs against the wall, MACA came out and took the third set from WCA with a 25-17 win to stay alive and force a fourth set.
It was another rollercoaster affair in the fourth set. WCA was able to keep their noses in front and held a slim 21-18 lead, but MACA closed the gap down to 24-23 before WCA was able to score the match point to seal the win. “We had a great crowd and fan base tonight at The Castle. We came out strong with the energy of the fans in the stands,” head coach Missy Foslien said.
Sophia Hansen was the main offensive threat for the Knights, finishing the game with 18 kills to lead the team. Ashlyn Lohse also had double-digit kills, finishing with 12 and Jaclynn Nelson and Brinley Ulrich each had eight. Emily Strunk dished out assists on 25 of those kills and Hannah Olson had 17 set assists.
