The West Central Area softball team went 2-1 last week to go above .500 on the season at 3-2. The Knights beat Minnewaska 14-8 on Tuesday, April 26, in Glenwood, and fell to Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 11-5 and beat Wheaton/Herman-Norcross 11-8 in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 28, in Barrett.
The Knights, now 3-2, are scheduled to play Benson in a doubleheader Tuesday, May 3, in Benson. On Thursday, May 5, WCA will travel to Montevideo for a conference doubleheader against the T-Hawks and WCA will close out the week at Morris/C-A for the second game against the Tigers.
WCA – 14
Minnewaska – 8
Claire Stark was in the zone on Tuesday, April 26, tallying four hits and leading WCA to a 14-8 win over Minnewaska Area, in Glenwood. Stark singled in the first, second, fifth, and seventh.
There was plenty of action on the basepaths as WCA collected 15 hits and Minnewaska Area had four.
WCA got on the board in the first inning when WCA scored on a stolen base during Stark’s at bat. Then Stark singled, driving in one more.
WCA notched seven runs in the second inning. WCA’s scoring came from single hits by Alaina Sykora, KJ Nibbe, Stark, a double by Halle Foslien and a groundout by Sophie Sanstead.
Minnewaska Area scored three runs in the third inning. Grace Larson and Riley Eischons moved runners across the plate with an RBI in the inning.
Nibbe was credited with the victory for WCA. She went six innings, gave up four hits and five runs while striking out seven.
WCA collected 15 hits on the day. Stark and Addison Staples led the charge with four apiece. Alaina Sykora led WCA with four stolen bases.
Morris/C-A – 11
WCA – 5
Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta softball knocked in six runs in the sixth on its way to an 11-5 victory over WCA in game one of a doubleheader for the Knights on Thursday, April 28, in Barrett.
MACA got things moving in the first inning, when Cate Kehoe singled on a 2-0 count to score Brianna Marty.
WCA knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the first inning after Alaina Sykora tagged up at third after KJ Nibbe flew out to center field.
MACA pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning.
WCA’s Mya Foslien hit a solo homer in the fourth to trim the deficit to 5-2, but MACA went off for six runs in the sixth to take a commanding 11-2 lead.
KJ Nibbe was tagged with the loss. She surrendered four runs on six hits over three innings, striking out two.
WCA tallied eight hits in the game led by three from Alaina Sykora. Addison Staples and Mya Fosilen both had two each.
WCA – 11
Wheaton/H-N – 8
WCA nabbed the lead late in the game in an 11-8 victory over Wheaton / Herman-Norcross on Thursday, April 28, in Barrett. The game was tied at seven with WCA batting in the bottom of the fifth when Mya Fosilen grounded out to the third baseman, scoring Claire Stark, who reached via triple to open the half inning.
KJ Nibbe led the WCA to victory in the pitcher’s circle. The hurler allowed eight hits and eight runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking three.
Anna Bright took the loss for Wheaton. Bright allowed eight hits and 11 runs over six innings, striking out two.
The Knights were led by Stark offensively. She went 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBI and two runs scored. KJ Nibbe added two hits, including a triple of her own.
Addy Blume led Wheaton with three hits in four at bats with two RBI.
