What sports at WCA will look like for the 2020-2021 school year

BY JACOB FOSLIEN, WCA Activities Director

The Minnesota State High School League’s Board of Directors, at its meeting on Aug. 4, approved moving forward with some changes regarding Fall activities. Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Soccer, and Girls Swimming and Diving will begin on Aug. 17 with limitations. The Board of Directors also approved moving Football and Volleyball to a modified spring season. This decision, in a sense has now created four participation seasons for the MSHSL athletics WCA offers:

Season 1: Girls Tennis (co-op with Morris Area), Boys and Girls Cross County (Mid-August to Mid-October)

Season 2: Wrestling, Boys and Girls Basketball (Scheduled to begin in Mid-November)

Season 3: Volleyball, Football, Football Cheerleading (Mid-March to Mid-May)

Season 4: Baseball, Softball, Boys and Girls Golf, Boys and Girls Track and Field (Mid-May to Mid-July)

Regarding the Fall Sports we will now offer at West Central Area (Girls Tennis and Boys and Girls Cross Country), some of the limitations approved by the Board of Directors include:

* Interscholastic scrimmages will not be allowed.

* The number of teams involved in a competition will be limited to three teams.

* Season length will be reduced to 80 percent.

* The number of competitions will be reduced to 70 percent.

At WCA, Girls Tennis and Cross Country will begin on August 17. What new schedules will look like, I am uncertain at this time. I am awaiting more sport specific guidance from the MSHSL and when that happens, schedules will be finalized and I will update RSchoolToday.

A statement by the MSHSL says: “The MSHSL Board of Directors had some very hard decisions to make. At the end of the day, our students will still be able to participate and we need to be thankful for that. Nothing was cancelled, schedules will look different, and we will adapt.”
